Manchester United have been dealt a fresh transfer blow in their bid to bring a world-class defender to Old Trafford this summer.

Jose Mourinho has been embarrassed by the mistakes made by his current group of centre backs, and he knows he needs a quality defender if he is to challenge for the Premier League next season.

Leonardo Bonucci has been Mourinho’s number one target all summer and the Portuguese manager had been hoping that Milan’s failure to qualify for the Champions League could fuel Bonucci’s desire to leave them, but the Italy captain claims he is happy at the club.

Speaking to Skye Sports, Bonucci, who moved to Milan in £37.4m last summer, suggested that he has made a decision to remain with the Rosseneri.

“There is no problem whatsoever [at Milan],” Bonucci told Sky Sport Italia. “I hope these rumours will be put to bed so we can build something important.

“We’re aiming to return to the Champions League and to compete for big objectives.”

The Red Devils would now turn their attention to Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, but Spurs want at least £50 million.
