Jamie Carragher has not always been eager to heap praise on Manchester United players, but there is an inevitable exception this time.

The former Liverpool captain has made some controversial remarks over the quality of United’s squad this season despite the obvious flaws of his own Anfield club.

However, when it comes to David de Gea, Carragher admits Jose Mourinho currently boasts a player superior to anyone in his position around the world.

When asked about the goalkeeper he is picking for his team of the season on Monday Night Football, the ex-England international showed admiration for United’s shot-stopper.

“I’ve gone for De Gea [in my team of the season].” Carragher was quoted as saying

“I still think he’s the best in the Premier League. He’s probably the best goalkeeper in the world. It’s close with him and Manuel Neuer. I think he’s probably better.”

Even from a neutral perspective, it is difficult to disagree with Carragher here.

Manuel Neuer has for long been considered the world’s best but his arrogance and lapses in concentration in certain periods of the game makes that claim now a debatable one.

And if goalkeepers really received the same amount of recognition as outfield players, it would not be entirely inaccurate to suggest that De Gea is indeed up there with the likes of Neymar and Robert Leowandowski as one of the top 10 players around the globe.
