Jose Mourinho asks United fans to change their attitude about this player
Jose Mourinho has called upon Manchester United fans to show more support to Romelu Lukaku. His comments came after Saturday’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur, when the striker attracted some groans from the crowd with parts of his performance.
Despite not having the best of games, Lukaku still made an impact. It was his flick-on that lead to Antony Martial scoring the only goal of the game. That made it three assists for the season to go with the seven goals he’s scored. Mourinho perhaps has a point when he says the Belgian is not getting the appreciation he deserves.
There were always going to be high expectations following Lukaku’s mega-money transfer from Everton. He scored 25 goals for the Merseyside club last season, and most online sportsbooks have him as second favourite to be the Premier League’s goal scorer this season. Is he really falling way short of those expectations, though?
Not really, but the issue that some fans seem to have is his performances in the big games. Lukaku has been accused in some quarters of going missing against top opposition, and his lack of impact during the recent goalless draw with Liverpool didn’t help. So, there was perhaps an element of frustration among the fans when he was guilty of some poor touches on Saturday.
Mourinho clearly feels that such frustration is not justified. Here’s what he had to say when talking about the matter on MUTV.
“I would like the supporters to explain to me why they don’t support him so much because he gives everything and I think it is not fair. When scoring the goal or not scoring the goal, [he] makes all the difference. I don’t think it’s fair at all. So, I’m a bit disappointed – but not with him. With him, very pleased.”
Lukaku’s next chance to impress in a big game comes in less than a week. Following the Champions League game Benfica, United will travel to Chelsea on the weekend for another top of the table clash. A goal or two for Lukaku in that fixture will surely unite the fans behind him.
