Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who is on a season-long loan at Aston Villa, has admitted he’s unsure what the future holds, but will speak to both clubs at the end of the season to clarify his situation.

The 24-year-old rose through the United youth ranks and has been loaned out to Oldham Athletic, Scunthorpe United, Walsall, Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers, Preston North End and finally Villa.

He’s kept an impressive 14 clean sheets in 34 Championship games for the promotion-chasing Midlands side this season, and manager Steve Bruce has admitted he wants to keep Johnstone for the foreseeable future.

The England u20 international is keeping his cards close to his chest, however, telling Aston Villa’s official website: “I enjoy it here. I love playing football here and training every day. I want to keep playing football. I’m enjoying the number of games I’m playing.

“But the truth is I’ve not spoken to anyone about (my future) as of yet. My plan is to finish off this season and then see what Manchester United and Aston Villa’s position is on the matter.”

It’s expected that Villa will try to sign Johnstone on a permanent deal with how impressive his form has been this season, but United may well want to keep him as cover for David De Gea.

Sergio Romero has deputised in the Spaniard’s absence this season, but Johnstone could certainly be third-choice between the sticks ahead of Joel Pereira.
