Manchester United are reported to be ‘increasingly confident’ of agreeing a deal to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld by next week.

Jose Mourinho is widely known to be chasing the addition of at least one more defender after a season which saw the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones fail to perform at a consistent level.

Alderweireld, a $98,000-a-week star, has been touted as United’s most preferred target due to his Premier League experience and the fact that Tottenham are being forced to sell him.

Spurs have not always been keen on negotiating a deal with the Red Devils to sell the Belgium international.

But journalist Sam Pilger is reporting that the club is ‘increasingly confident’ about securing a deal for Alderweireld by next week.

Alderweireld has already expressed his interest in a move away from Tottenham and Manchester United will perhaps be his best opportunity to compete at the highest level as he enters the latter stages of his career.

If the Red Devils are to come back stronger next season and go a step above where they finished in the Premier League last year, then the centre-back position will have to be bolstered.
