Thoughts on how Ten Hag is transforming the team
I can’t believe I’m saying it, but we’re fun to watch! It feels like a corner has been turned and we’re heading back in the right direction. The man management from Ten Hag is what is so striking.
Garnacho had the wrist slap on tour, and Rashford just got it last weekend. Handled CR7 about as well as could possibly be asked of him. He’s giving Sancho time to get right. He’s getting a tune out of AWB. Donny hadn’t been amazing or anything, but he had been serviceable the last couple of matches.
I thought his Wolves cameo was a step toward him figuring some stuff out and he was putting in some good tackles yesterday before the injury (I feel awful for that guy, if the injury is as bad as it looked; talk about horrible luck for him. We probably need him the rest of the way, even if he’s just a squad/rotation piece to soak up some minutes).
The situation after the Brentford match just keeps sticking with me as well – gonna make everyone run, the players are reportedly pissed about it…then he shows up and is like, “I’m running it too!” and everyone seemed to get it. He wasn’t just shitting on the players.
Only thing I’m worried about now is injuries/depth. Yeah, they overspent this summer and that’s probably a handicap at the exact moment when we need another player or two. But damn – Casemiro is incredible, Martinez has been great, I still can’t believe they have Eriksen on a free, Malacia has given them good minutes, and while Antony is out of form, he’s still promising and has popped up with big goals already.
If they add another player or two this month – unlikely to be long-term but they’ll need guys – then I think we’re finishing top 4.
I hate to say the words title challenge with City and Arsenal coming up, but I agree with many optimists – and I’m whispering it. If they get some result at the end of the month, the boys might be in with a title challenge. I mean even being in the neighborhood of that right now, given how 2021-22 went, is nothing short of extraordinary.
