Manchester United were handed the greenlight to secure the signing of Atletico Madrid star, Diego Godin this week, as per Sky Sports.

Jose Mourinho is understood to be looking for an experienced centre-back to sign before the transfer window is shut later today.

Various players including Leicester City Harry Maguire have been linked with the Red Devils but it now appears as though a mvoe for arguably the best defender in the world was actually offered.

As per Sky Sports, the agent of Diego Godin actually informed Manchester United that the South American star was willing to move to Old Trafford.

Despite being handed the greenlight to sign the $186,000-a-week star, United’s offer for Godin then triggered Atletico Madrid to offer the Uruguayan a new contract at the club.

“Godin’s agent was actually the one who approached Manchester United this week, saying the player was keen to come to Old Trafford and a deal could be done.” Sky’s reporter said

“It’s my information that United made an offer for the agent to take to the Atletico board and within hours Godin signed a new contract on improved terms at Atletico Madrid, earning him 7.5m euros net per year.

“To be clear, Mourinho would have been keen to sign Godin, but he believes the desire on the agent’s part was always to leverage the situation to get a new contract for his client.”
