Manchester United will still make a move for the signing of a new box-to-box midfielder this summer, despite the signing of Fred this week, according to Manchester Evening News.

Jose Mourinho has bolstered his squad with the signing of the Brazilian star but the report claims that Fred is only a replacement for Michael Carrick who retired at the end of the season.

The looming departure of Marouane Fellaini also necessitates the signing of a new midfielder, and Mourinho appears to be pursuing a younger box-to-box player.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has been targeted by the Red Devils this summer, but the 23-year-old has several suitors and United may lose out on a deal for him in the end.

Another player who has been linked to the Manchester United is Lorenzo Pellegrini of AS Roma who is just 22.

Mourinho hinted in April that he would replace the Belgian should he leave, stressing that two signings would be required if the Red Devils lose the two midfielders.
